ENEX
Community Service

Active engagement in one's community is the cornerstone of a healthy and democratic society.  There is no better way to build self-esteem, develop good interpersonal skills and build leadership than through the act of giving back. All Spectrum students are expected to complete a minimum of 30 community service hours by the end of their Grade 9 year.

The ENEX (Enrichment Exploration) project is an independent and long-term mentor-supported project that allows students to pursue an individual area of interest.  The ENEX journey culminates in the Grade 10 year with students working closely with an expert in their chosen field and celebrating their learning journey at the annual Spectrum Gala.  In Grade 10, students complete the project as a 4-credit Directed Independent Studies course.

Fun fact: Past ENEX projects have included everything from sloth-keeping to forensic pathology!

The Grade 10 trip is definitely one of the most highly anticipated Spectrum experiences!  Students will spend a very busy week in Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City participating in a wide variety of educational programs that have been chosen to complement and enrich their studies in the Sciences and Humanities.  Cultural experiences are added in to round out what is always an exciting and action-packed trip.

Being a well-rounded individual means being strong in mind, body and spirit.  The Strathcona field experiences in Grades 8 and 9 are designed to challenge Spectrum students to step outside of their comfort zones and to test their leadership, communication and physical abilities.  The Grade 8 and 9 trips have different educational focuses ranging from environmental stewardship to problem-solving.  The Strathcona field experiences are often cited as two of the most powerful and transformative aspects of being in Spectrum.

Program Cornerstones

A comprehensive three year program.

The aim of Spectrum is to encourage the development of self-motivated, well-rounded citizens. Successful applicants to the program will take their four core academic courses (English, Social Studies, Math and Science) together as a cohort, but will have their physical education and elective courses with other SLSS students.  Students of the Spectrum program are expected to commit for the entire length of the program, to all aspects of the program, including those outlined here.
